Campaign creative that ignores brand guidelines might feel fresher in isolation, but it usually costs the brand more than it gains, because consistency is part of what makes a brand recognisable to an audience encountering it repeatedly over time. Guidelines exist precisely so that a bold new campaign still reads as belonging to the same company as everything that came before it.

Working within guidelines does not have to mean working without ambition or imagination. The strongest campaign creative usually finds genuine room to surprise an audience inside a brand's existing visual and verbal system, rather than treating that system as an obstacle to originality that must be quietly worked around at every opportunity.

When a campaign genuinely needs to stretch beyond current guidelines, that conversation should happen deliberately and early, with the people responsible for the brand system involved from the very start of planning. Quietly breaking guidelines and hoping nobody notices tends to create far more friction later than simply raising the issue up front and discussing it properly.
