Measuring brand health beyond awareness

Awareness is often the very first metric organisations reach for when assessing overall brand health, largely because it is genuinely straightforward to measure using standard tools, but awareness alone says essentially nothing about whether that recognition actually translates into genuine trust, real preference or lasting loyalty among the audience that currently holds it.
A fuller and more honest picture of brand health includes measures such as perceived differentiation, genuine trust and willingness to recommend to others, each of which captures something awareness alone genuinely cannot, and together they give a far more honest sense of whether a brand's reputation is truly strengthening meaningfully over time.
Organisations that track only awareness run a real risk of celebrating growth in recognition while simultaneously missing a genuine decline in trust or preference happening underneath, a combination that can leave a brand widely known but increasingly disliked, a genuinely worse position than being less known but consistently well regarded by those who do know it.
